The story behind afternoon tea
Afternoon tea was introduced during the early 19th century by Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford.
The Duchess is said to have complained of “having that sinking feeling” during the late afternoon.
At the time it was usual for people to take only two main meals a day: breakfast, and dinner at around 8pm.
The solution for the Duchess was a pot of tea and a light snack, taken privately in her boudoir during the afternoon.
Friends were invited round to join her in her rooms at Woburn Abbey where the practice proved so popular, the Duchess continued it when she returned to London.
The ethos of Langan’s Tea Rooms
By supporting our tea rooms, you are also supporting an amazing charity, The O’Conner Gateway Charitable Trust, which has helped and supported so many people.
Revenue generated by the tea rooms is ploughed back into community services. This includes providing education, training and employment for those individuals who have undergone rehabilitation at the BAC O’Connor Centre, in Staffordshire.
All staff in the tea rooms are graduates of the BAC O’Connor Centre and the profits help the staff and volunteers gain qualifications and valuable skills within a supportive environment.
